Baptizing Your Child
St. Augustine’s is honored and filled with joy that you desire to baptize your child. Because baptism is a sacrament of initiation, it is important that you are made aware of what is entailed in the preparation for baptism and for the actual liturgy. What is the Process?
Fill out the baptism form to the right.
Wait for confirmation of date and time.
As soon as you receive it, bring a copy of your child's birth certificate to the office.
Baptism Classes Baptism classes are a necessary and important part of your preparation. Please contact the parish office: 208-882-4613 or email [email protected] for more information on your options.
Godparents (Sponsors) of the child being baptized are also requested to attend Baptismal Preparation Class if possible. They may do this in their home parish.
Parents seeking Baptism for their child should be active in their Catholic faith or planning to become active in the faith. Parents and sponsors are encouraged to complete their sacramental formation before the baby is born, if possible.
Two Forms Baptismal liturgies occur in two forms: baptism within the context of the Holy Mass and baptism as its own rite. The choice is personal and may be noted on the Baptismal Registration Form.
Proxies If the chosen sponsors are unable to attend the actual Baptism, proxies are to be chosen to stand in for them during the Baptism. Proxies may be family/friends who would be comfortable participating in the Baptism ceremony. At least one of the proxies should be an active practicing Catholic.
Godparents (Sponsors) At least one sponsor is required to be an active practicing Catholic; a second sponsor may be a baptized Christian of another faith. Prior to the Baptism, sponsors who attend Mass outside of St. Augustine’s Parish must obtain a written letter from the parish they regularly attend specifying that they are practicing Catholics. These letters may be sent to:

Attire Since the church is a sacred place and Baptism is a sacred liturgy, please come dressed appropriately. The minister will be anointing the chest of your child with holy oil; please take that into consideration when preparing your child for the liturgy (tuxedos are difficult, but a button-up shirt and dresses are fine). Infants should ideally be dressed in white.
The parish provides a baptismal candle and a simple baptismal garment. You are welcome to provide your own if you prefer a particular candle or garment.
Cells phones and pagers should be silenced, and there is no food, drink, or gum allowed in the church. Baby bottles are an exception.
Stipends It is customary to give a stipend to the church in order to assist in the upkeep and pay for lighting and heating costs. Stipends can be placed in an envelope and given to the minister or to the parish office. We suggest a stipend of $50. Please feel free to contact the parish if you have any questions.
